Spring is finally here; also known as wedding season. With all the dos and don'ts out there about how to dress appropriately for the occasion it can be quite stressful finding a suitable outfit... You don't want to wear black as it is associated with funerals, but wear white and you will be insulting the bride; you can't show too much skin in church but sleeves can be unbearably hot in the sun, and you have to look smart but not in an office kind of way, and the list goes on. So I thought I would check out the new online department store, http://www.very.co.uk/ for some suitable attire.
Fascinators are really popular at the moment; they are a modern take on the traditional hat but still feel elegant and smart. Don't be afraid of them, you will be surprised how many other guests will be wearing them too. They come in all shapes and colour, so try on a few to find the one that suits you best. Tip: Remember that in most cases it is polite to take off head wear for a sit down meal.

This is the most daring of the bunch, but has a manageable price of £26

This top hat inspired fascinator is perfect for all those tomboys out there, and it adds a splash of colour with the bow £23
For those on a budget, this fascinator and matching clutch set is a steal at £30 and also comes in cream.
Stand out from the crowd in this beautiful beaded head piece. I have never seen a fascinator like this before and it is versatile enough to wear on a special night out also. £20
When it comes to a wedding outfit there are lots of pitfalls to avoid. Generally, your dress needs to be neither full length or too short; avoid black or white but black and white is fine; cover your shoulders for the ceremony if it is in a church, you may also need to cover your hair depending on the religion so a shawl is handy. You want to look smart but not like you are about to go to work; cleavage should not be on show and materials like satin or too much lace can be a no-no as well. I have deliberately chosen colourful dresses as I think they look cheerful and make wedding pictures look more interesting.

For the romantic lady this classic neckline and floaty skirt is very "The Sound of Music". I would go for nude lipstick and tie hair back to show off the pretty ruffles. £49

For ladies who like their prints this dress is perfect as its not too much and the cut is very modest with the high neckline and gentle pleated skirt. The fitted waist shows off a good figure and the print makes the dress more interesting than your standard everyday shift. You could wear this dress again to a work function and it is also a bargain at £24.

The one shoulder dress is still very much on trend and this babydoll shape will suit most figures. Yellow is a great colour for blondes or olive skin and can be matched well with navy, black, cream or gold accessories. The flower detail is a lovely feature so there is no need for a necklace or dangling earrings. £69

For those of you who "don't do" dresses, here is a great alternative; the jumpsuit. It is elegant, striking, smart and different. Normally you wouldn't wear trousers to a wedding but somehow this wide leg jumpsuit is the exception to that rule in my book. The nice thing about black and white is that you can have colourful accessories. A hot pink clutch and matching lipstick would be my choice. £79

This dress is ideal for hiding a tummy; the pleats at the front are generous and can hide pounds put on by eating comfort food to get through the winter. The plunging neckline is not too daring if you have a smaller bust and the cap sleeves make the dress more conservative. £49

If you have been reading my blog long enough you will know that florals are in again this year. This cotton shift dress is made tailored to fit closely to the body and show off your shape; the florals make it perfect for a wedding, and the high neckline make up for the skirt being above the knee. £49

You have to be a lady with slim hips to get away with this 30s drop waist dress. It is also a modern take on a wedding outfit and I think quite a nice alternative to your typical strapless numbers. £49

This dress is your answer to colour-blocking. Normally you find colour blocking dresses in garish brights, but this one is much more suitable for a formal occasion. I would wear a large fascinator, or (if you are brave enough) a hat with this dress to make up for it being strapless. Note that you will need to cover your shoulders for some parts of the day as this dress is a little on the racy side for a wedding. £59

This scarf comes in a variety of colours and is only £10. Perfect for covering hair and shoulders if need be.

This shrug is a sophisticated and elegant way to cover up while keeping the overall look tailored. £29
